JEWELRY MAKERS HUT

You decide to ask him (if he doesn't mind) for more details on the legend.

"The ring originated over 400 years ago in the fishing village of Claddagh (pronounced kla-da), outside Galway. According to popular legend, it was created by a jeweler named Joyce who learnt his trade as a goldsmith while in captivity in Algeria. When he was released he returned to Claddagh and came up with the idea of the ring on which he designed the love symbol. Originally it was a wedding ring that was passed down from Grandmother to Granddaughter and if it was worn facing inwards towards the heart on the left hand it meant a girl was married; inwards on the right hand meant she was unavailable for some reason and outwards on either hand, she was available. Today the symbol is found on other types of Jewelry, such as pendants and brooches, and is more a sign of friendship than marriage"
