You're not entirely sure what to talk to a donkey about, so you just ask him his age in donkey years.

You seem to have upset or at least perplexed our Donkey. Eventually…he responds "Well, to my knowledge there are no such thing as Donkey years, anyway I'm a giraffe and it is very rude to ask a giraffe his age" hmm, Maybe he's not as wise as we thought!

Ask him about his friendship with the "elderly gentleman"
Offer him some Sugar cubes
